The outstanding feature of Hemingbrough is the Parish church of St Mary the virgin. Originally Catholic Mary Ward being foundress. It has a imposing spire which was erected early in the fifteenth century. Hemingbrough lies almost mid-way between ancient towns of Howden and Selby being five miles either way.

In William the Conquerors Domesday Survey of 1086 the area is referred to as Hamiburg. It is possible that this originates from the `Burg of Hemma` or Hemming where Hemming was a common Norse name in those days of Viking invasions.
